Max O’Connor – who is the brother of star Rogan O’Connor – started playing rugby at the age of 4.

But after the personal trainer, from Stratford-Upon-Avon, suffered a number of injuries from the sport, he turned his eyes onto bodybuilding competitions.

Then at the age of 23, he won the NABBA Pro AM title and has already been a runner-up at Mr Universe, both in 2012 and 2017.

Having endured eight surgeries in the last four years, Max hopes his 5,500 calories diet will pay off later next month.

“My ultimate goal is to win Mr Universe”

Speaking about his achievements, the 30-year-old said: “[It was] definitely winning the world championships in 2015.

“My ultimate goal is to win Mr Universe [next month] after finishing runner-up twice. Since 2008 it’s been my main goal.

“I started in a bulking phase last year until the end of July to try to put on as much tissue as possible. Since then, preparation has been in full flow.”

His typical training in the build-up to a competition consists of 90 minutes of cardio, with 45 minutes fasting in the morning and evening.

As he exercises in a certain way, Max tends to train by himself most of the time because of his injuries.

“Just enjoy it and don’t focus on other people,” Max added.

“Focus on yourself and your progression. I believe it’s about enjoying the journey.”

Max started his transformation in 2008, which means it’s taken him an incredible 10 years to be where he is now.

While training for Mr Universe, Max explained: “I would say that one of the hardest aspects of being a bodybuilder is sticking to the diet.

“I know some of the boys I train with could eat all day every day just bland food and ramming it in, but for me I don’t have a great appetite.”

Currently his diet consists of six meals, for breakfast Max will eat oats with eggs, egg whites and a USN Blue Lab Whey Protein Shake.

For meal number two, he has whole eggs on wholegrain bread and for his third he enjoys a large chicken and rice meal with plenty of vegetables.

As for meal number four, Max eats soaked oats, USN Blue Lab Whey protein shake and USN Muscle Fuel.

He eats his fifth meal in between training, where he has a USN BCAA Power Punch and a USN carbohydrate powder.

Max’s final meal of the day consists of white fish and white rice.

“I don’t have a massively big appetite and I think bodybuilders in general struggle with appetite because your force eating most of the time which you makes you feel uncomfortable and bloated,” he explained.

“So, I’ve gone down the supplement route with carb drinks and things like that which I found work well for me.”

Now he claims that getting into bodybuilding gave him a new focus in life and something to work towards.

The hunk added: “I would spend so much time in the gym trying to overcome my injury setbacks and it made it feel like it wasn’t worthless and just for the sake of it.

“I found my niche and the work started to contribute to my bodybuilding goals.

“I already had quite a lot of self-motivation and discipline, but it was good to use and channel it into bodybuilding.”

“I’ve learnt a lot about macros since turning to bodybuilding that would have probably helped my performance back when I used to play rugby.”

Max O’Connor’s measurements before and after:

Weight: 118kg/90kg

Waist: 34”/34”

Thigh: 30”/26”

Chest: 52”/48”

Biceps: 22”/18”
