Sam on Why You Shouldn’t Try Anything New on Race Day . . .
“If you don’t usually have a coffee before you run, race day is not the time to try it out. You don’t want to find out on kilometre five or 14 that your new runners give you blisters or that your new sports bra gives you chafing. Stick to what you know to avoid any nasty surprises.”
Sam on Why You Need to Eat, Drink, Sleep Repeat . . .
“Hydrate properly in the lead up to race day, not just the night before. It’s also important to make sure you sip regularly as opposed to sculling your drink bottle in a desperate attempt to hydrate at the last minute. City2Surf is by no means an easy feat but it’s not quite a long enough distance to require carb loading. The night before the event your dinner should be a healthy balance of protein, good fats and quality carbohydrates. Just like any dinner, try to make vegetables the hero and be sure to include some starchy veg as your carb source. Remember – don’t try anything new! Make sure it’s a dinner you’ve had before to avoid any stomach upsets.”

“There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a fun run. Music pumping, big crowds and that nervous excitement running through your body. It can be easy to get caught up on the atmosphere but remember not to go too hard too fast. You don’t want to crash and burn halfway. Stick to your training pace or a pace you know will be manageable for the distance.”
